The Saldanha Bay Municipality is refusing to comment on why it withdrew security for slain councillor, Arthur Gqeba.

The 40-year-old was shot dead outside his Vredenburg home on Friday.

The alleged hit comes after the municipality withdrew his security.

Gqeba’s family and the ANC condemned the municipality’s decision

They say the municipality has been aware of threats against Gqeba for at least two years.

In fact – the Ward 9 councillor survived two different assassination attempts during this period.

In one of those, almost exactly a year ago, he was shot eight times.

The ANC Caucus says the municipality gave Gqeba security in September 2022 but apparently withdrew it in July 2023, without giving reasons.

The municipality has refused to comment saying the police are probing the matter.

But authorities do say that they’re saddened by the loss of Gqeba and condemned the violent attack.
