The South African Democratic Teachers Union in the Western Cape wants the Education Department to cut the “back on track” program budget and use the money to employ more teachers.
This follows the Union’s declaration of a formal dispute over the impending job cuts to hit the education sector by the end of 2024.
Around 2400 teacher jobs are on the line, allegedly due to National Treasury budget cuts.
SADTU’s secretary, Sibongile Kwazi, says the “back on track” program had been intended for the COVID-19 period and that there’s no need for it anymore.
The programme had been set up to ensure pupils had caught up on work lost during the pandemic.
Kwazi says the department should also cut the Annual Systemic Evaluation to save money.
