There’s a new Pope – the first North American to lead the Roman Catholic Church.
Pope Leo XIV was elected in the Vatican City yesterday evening.
He becomes the 267th pontiff.
As he steps into the role, Pope Leo faces major decisions about the Church’s future, including whether to continue Pope Francis’ legacy of inclusivity and reform, or choose a different path.
Head of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, says he’s hopeful that the Pope will follow in his predecessor’s footsteps.
Makgoba also welcomed how often Pope Leo referenced his predecessor during his maiden speech.
