A land rights activist is impressed with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to sign the Expropriation Bill into law.
The Presidency says the legislation sets out how organs of State may expropriate property in the public interest, for varied reasons.
This will happen through negotiation on the acquisition of the property before resorting to expropriation.
Advocate Thembeka Ngcukayitobi has been a key contributor on this issue.
He adds that this legislation is not dealing with expropriation of land…
One key sticking point in the runup to the passing of this Bill by parliament, was the definition of property.
Government has been asked to define whether property only refers to an immovable asset or includes land.
This is an issue that will closely be monitored by various quarters as government plans to implement the newly signed legislation.
