The process of redeploying police officers to crime-ridden areas in Cape Town is underway.
Provincial Police Commissioner, Thembisile Patekile, says 187 officers have been moved to various hotspots — these include Nyanga, Khayelitsha and Delft.
Earlier this month Police Minister, Bheki Cele, promised to move about 80 officers from areas in less dire need of police visibility.
Patekile says the process had already begun in May – when the first batch of officers was moved to Makhaza.
Patekile added that police numbers will be further bolstered by the additional police expected in December.
“So far we have moved 187 personnel from the other areas to the top 10 stations that are contributing 45% of our murders and most feared crimes. We are still waiting for the 1 218 new police that will be coming out the college in December.”
