Eskom has ramped up rolling blackouts to Stage 4, effective immediately until further notice.
This is a result of the breakdown of five generators at five power stations overnight.
The power utility is expected to release a statement on Tuesday to give a fuller picture for the rest of the week.
The City of Cape Town says it will continue to shield its customers from the full effect of the power cuts, and will be on Stage 2 until further notice.
