The nine provincial education departments will brief Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Basic Education on Wednesday, on the looming teacher job cuts.
Provinces are in a dilemma.
They’re unable to fund scores of educator posts for the 2025 school year.
This is due to budget cuts by the National Treasury.
Last week, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube met with all MECs and teacher unions to brief them about on progress made in dealing with the country’s fiscal challenges.
Speaking on her X account, she’s conceded that if the matter is not addressed, it certainly will affect the quality of education.
