The police are expected to bring murder charges against Parkwood residents who killed a man in a mob justice incident.

That could happen during the course of Friday.

On Thursday, police confirmed that they took a number of people in for questioning.

On Monday, social media rumours of a child kidnapping were swirling through the Parkwood community.

Those would later be proven to be false.

But at some point, a mob pulled a 31-year-old e-hailing driver from his car; set it alight, and – after beating the victim unconscious – pushed his body into the flames.

The police’s Joseph Swartbooi says they expect some of those who have been questioned to be formally charged with murder in the Wynberg magistrate’s court.

Swartbooi also called on everyone to be far more careful about sharing social media posts.

“The South African Police Service in the Western Cape has noted with concern various social media posts in relation to perceived kidnappings or abductions in the Cape Town Metropole and a few outlying areas. A plea is hereby made to use these platforms responsibly and to verify the source as well as the authenticity of the information before sharing it.”
