The Western Cape Police management is looking into the sudden increase in murders in Nyanga.

Over the past few years, the area became known as the murder capital of South Africa.

But, it seemed that police had managed to turn that around, with a consistent reduction in murders as well as other contact crimes.

Now, the most recent crime stats show a dramatic annual increase of more than 60% in the murder rate.

That’s propelled Nyanga back up to third place on a list of the worst precincts in the country for murder.

Western Cape Police Commissioner,  Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, says there are several factors driving the spike.

“We can say for sure that many reasons include taxi violence, money extortion shootings, acts of revenge and of course hijacking”.
