Langa Ward councillor, Thembelani Nyamakazi, says they’re finalising the number of victims affected by fire in Joe Slovo.
On Tuesday, Human Settlements Deputy Minister, Pamela Tshwete, said they’re ready to provide funding for the rebuilding of structures.
But there are discrepancies about the actual number of people affected.
The City of Cape Town says fewer than 800 people were rendered homeless by the fire.
But Nyamakazi believes that list was compiled a little too narrowly.
“What we agreed on is just the extension, or to give the benefit of the doubt for those people that went away. Some… went away for holiday, as you know that it was Easter weekend, and some of them, they went away like for church. So, we gave them that opportunity to be part of the list.”
