Eight hospitals in the Western Cape are now exempt from the effects of rolling blackouts.

Last week, Health Minister, Joe Phaahla, advised that three Western Cape hospitals will be exempt from power cuts.

Those are Groote Schuur, Tygerberg and the Red Cross Children’s Hospital.

But provincial health authorities noted that they’d already been exempt for the past four years.

The Department of Health and Wellness had then engaged with the City of Cape Town and Eskom to exempt more hospitals.

And according to the department’s Tanya Davids, progress has been made.

“Additional hospitals now exempted on the City of Cape Town grid are New Somerset Hospital, Mitchells’ Plain Hospital, Karl Bremer Hospital and Victoria Hospital. One additional hospital is also exempted on the Eskom grid which is George Hospital. We are happy that the voice of the Western Cape was heard, and we thank all the stakeholders.”
