The South African Weather Service has unveiled a new Rip Current Hazard Forecast model to reduce coastal drownings.

Rip currents are fast-moving water channels flowing from the shore to the sea.

According to the National Sea Rescue Institute, they significantly contribute to drownings.

This new model will issue a three-day forecast of the likelihood of rip currents.

The SA Weather Service’s Lebohang Makgati, says the model will be rolled out before the holiday season..
