The Western Cape’s new Mobility MEC, Ricardo Mackenzie, plans to keep pushing hard to have the rail system brought under local government control.

Mackenzie has replaced Daylin Mitchell who was appointed as Speaker of the provincial legislature.

The DA-led provincial government has made a campaign out of the call for devolution.

The party wants all competent provincial governments and municipalities, to be allowed to manage their local rail system.

Mackenzie says he will raise this matter with the national Transport Minister.

“Our rail infrastructure is very good in the Western Cape, but in other provinces, it’s not so good, because I had travelled.  If we can get rail functioning efficiently it will help the country’s economy going and I know they [National Government] can understand that argument very well”.
