The National Prosecuting Authority has intensified its efforts in dealing with a lengthy backlog in criminal cases.
According to Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Nicolette Bell, this is being done with the addition of four more courts in the province.
Courts are inundated with cases dealing with violent crimes on a daily basis, and Bell says the additional courts will allow for prosecutions to be finalised more speedily.
“The high court has, like all the district and regional courts, been impacted by Covid-19 pandemic – and we have developed a backlog of cases. The Judge President has created four additional divisions to complement the existing 12 courts that we had, to work through this backlog.”
