Speaker of the Western Cape Provincial Legislature,  Masizole Mnqasela has until 10h00 on Tuesday to try to retain his DA membership.

The DA says his membership was discontinued after he violated the party’s federal executive rules.

He’s accused of criticising the party or decisions taken by its structures, in public.

On Sunday, Mnqasela said he was shocked when the DA tabled a motion of no confidence against him.

He has been charged with misconduct and has been suspended from all party activities.

In May, whistle-blowers handed over a report alleging that Mnqasela filed fraudulent claims for subsistence, travel and entertainment.

He has denied the allegations.

Mnqasela has until 10h00 to apply for re-admission to the party.

The DA’s  Federal Council Chairperson, Helen Zille, said , “ Whether or not he continues as a Speaker after tomorrow, will depend on the decision of the Federal Executive that will study and discuss his reapplication for membership”.
