The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) is appealing to the police to outline plans to deal with kidnapping and extortion cases.
Last month, the MJC and other groups met with Police Minister, Bheki Cele, and Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, to discuss ways to deal with these crimes.
There’s been a spate of kidnapping and extortion cases in the Cape, in which mostly business people were targeted.
Last week, a 35-year-old woman was kidnapped in the Blue Downs area – and it’s understood that she’s the wife of a local business owner.
The MJC’s Moulana Abdul Khaliq Allie says they want answers.
“We want the South African Police Service to be very serious about this particular crime within our community, the kidnapping of our people. And that much more are to be instituted to prevent the kidnapping and hijacking of the business community.”
