The Employment and Labour Department says it will investigate the deaths of three construction workers — who were trapped inside a sewage drain in Mitchells Plain.
The incident occurred at the Kosovo Farm housing project site in New Woodlands a week ago.
Work at the site was put on hold following the incident.
The department’s Mapula Tloubatla says the site was handed over to police to determine if a criminal act has taken place.
“The department then draft a preliminary report, stating what happened as indicated by the senior person representing the employer. Following clearance from the medical doctor, we then start the formal investigation. In this case, we have not started the formal investigation yet, as the witnesses have not been medically cleared.”
