A lack of maintenance and outdated equipment over the years, are some of the major factors that have led to the Port of Cape Town’s decline.

That’s according to Transport Minister, Barbara Creecy, following a visit to the port on Monday.

Creecy held meetings with Transnet Port authorities to get a better sense of the inefficiencies hampering the harbour and what the solutions are.

She says with the start of the deciduous fruit season, it’s imperative that delays are minimised and that exports aren’t affected by fruit that has gone bad.

Last season about 80% of all deciduous fruit exports from South Africa were shipped from the Port of Cape Town.
