Metrorail says it plans to implement CCTV cameras as part of measures to safeguard trains.

A limited service has resumed on the Central Line this week.

The line was closed in 2019, due to ongoing theft and vandalism. Illegal occupations further hampered recovery work.

Metrorail’s Zino Mihi says the technological part of protecting the rail infrastructure will be implemented as vandalized trains are fixed.

It’s not clear when this will happen though.

Mihi says armed guards have already been deployed as one measure.

“Especially now that we are having contractors that are busy recovering the Central Line with various construction projects, such as: the electrical wires, the perway – that is our rail tracks – and also the station upgrades. So, we’ve got additional security that is deployed, it’s for instance the armed guards.”
