Community Safety and Police Oversight MEC, Reagan Allen, says an attack on police is an attack on democracy.
This follows the death of Constable Donay Phillips – one of the three people killed in the shooting at the New Somerset Hospital last week.
The national police force honoured Phillips’ life, and work on the force, at a memorial service today.
The MEC says he hopes the family will be comforted during this time.
Adding that investigations into the shooting is ongoing.
“SAPS members offer their life to serve and to protect us, in order for us to be safer, so this is deeply tragic. We sincerely trust that his legacy will continue to live. The South African Police Service has offered support, which is appreciated – and I’m sure that continued support will be provided to the family as well.”
