The Members of Parliament have called on law enforcement agencies to toughen up, amid growing acts of extortion in the country.

The matter had been debated in Parliament, on Tuesday.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu says several communities, across the country, have shared their frustrations about this issue.

Extortionists are targeting school and housing projects, churches, spaza shops and owners of nightlife establishments.

DA MP and Police Portfolio Committee Chairperson, Ian Cameron, says extortion is making things increasingly hard for those want to earn an honest living.

Meanwhile, uMkhonto weSizwe Party’s Mandla Skosana, says they’re concerned about the alleged involvement of police in these criminal activities.

Gauteng, the Western Cape, Kwazulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, are responsible for 73 percent of crime levels in this country.

It seems government’s so-called silo mentality is, now, being addressed.

Mchunu says meetings are currently being held with sister departments in the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster, as a collaborative approach to fighting these crimes.

The National Policing Policy is scheduled to be finalised by the end of next month.
