In a femicide case that has rocked the Lavender Hill Community, a 56-year-old man is behind bars after he allegedly murdered his partner at her home in Constitution Court.
The 51-year-old woman’s body was found in a pool of blood on Sunday.
She was declared dead at the scene.
“According to reports police were called to the crime scene where they found the victim laying in a pool of blood. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the incident is believed to be domestic-related. The suspect – a 56-year-old man – was arrested in connection with the murder on Monday morning (2023-04-24). He will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates court once he has been charged”, said police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk.
Lavender Hill community leader and the director of the New World Foundation, Erica Jacobs says the community’s shocked.
“Any life lost is unnecessary, especially in the context of all our efforts around gender-based violence. It just feels like we are fighting a losing battle”.
Jacobs is appealing to victims of gender-based violence to reach out and seek help.
” There’re lots of women in communities that are suffering in silence. I venture to say it’s not a once off incident that leads to femicide. Unfortunately a lot of our women believe that they can’t share their trauma, can’t ask for help, and that’s the sad part”.
