The Western Cape’s political leadership and health officials are united in opposition to the proposed new health regulations.

The planned legislation is currently out for public comment.

In it, Covid-19 joins several other conditions as notifiable diseases – and the Minister of Health gets sweeping powers to deal with them.

These include imposing lockdowns, quarantine, mandatory vaccinations, and liquor bans.

Health MEC, Nomafrench Mbombo, opposes a one-size-fits-all approach.

“It means that measles [and] listeriosis… will all be under one umbrella. Even for the other categories, for example TB – how do you put TB and Covid[-19] as part of that?”
