Koeberg Nuclear Power Station has been granted a licence extension of 20 years.
The National Nuclear Regulator has given Eskom the go-ahead to continue operating Koeberg’s Unit 1, until July 2044.
Unit 1 provides 930 Megawatts to the grid.
Eskom has been operating the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station for 40 years.
Eskom’s national spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena, says Unit 1 joins around 120 reactors, worldwide, to have safely continued operations beyond four decades.
Despite Unit 1’s licence expiring in July 2044, it will continue operating for another six months.
