The new school year starts on Wednesday, but there are still learners in the Western Cape who have no school to go to.

According to Education MEC, David Maynier, the holidays ended with fewer than a thousand pupils still needing desks.

But it’s the late applications that pose the next major challenge to his department.

There are potentially thousands of people who’ve made no previous contact with the education authorities, who will arrive at schools today, looking for spaces.

The problem, according to Maynier, is that the schools are full.

“Parents who have not yet applied for a place for their child must contact their Education District Office immediately. They must not queue up outside schools with the expectation of being accepted to their school of choice. Our schools are full, and while they may be able to assist with completing applications, the district office will assist with placement centrally”.
