The Judicial Service Commission has recommended that President Cyril Ramaphosa appoint Noluthando Nziweni as the judge of the Western Cape High Court.
Nziweni and three other candidates were interviewed for the position, on Monday.
She has presided over several key cases in the High Court.
In May, she was part of the full bench that dismissed the bail application of alleged Parliament arsonist, Zandile Mafe.
A month later, she sentenced Vusumzi Pothelwa to life in prison for murdering his eight-month-old daughter.
Ramaphosa will eventually decide if she will get the position.
