The City of Cape Town says a protest in Hout Bay broke out after some unroadworthy and unlicensed taxis were impounded.

It’s unclear when these taxis were impounded, but the City says checks on mini busses are to ensure that commuters are transported safely.

Several roads were closed off, while Cape Town law enforcement agencies were deployed to the scene to quell violence at the protest.

Hout Bay ward councillor, Rob Quintas, says stones and rocks were being thrown at cars, and some protestors even poured petrol on vehicles.

Quintas condemned the violence.

“Our City services have committed where possible to arrest and charge perpetrators of public violence.”
