Police have confirmed the discovery of human remains at the site where a building had collapsed in George.

The remains were found among the debris on Friday.

Authorities remain tight-lipped however about the actual parts of the body that were found.

But, Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies says the human remains were discovered by a security guard deployed on-site.

“The reports available suggest that on Friday, 24 May 2024 at about 11:00 police were dispatched to the site where debris of the collapsed building is still kept. On arrival, they found a hand which was discovered by security personnel deployed at the site. The human remains were recovered and sent to the SAPS Laboratory for forensic analysis to determine the origin and whether it could be linked to a victim who was rescued during the search and rescue operation. This discovery forms part of the ongoing police probe”.

The discovery comes after the rescue and recovery operation was formally concluded more than a week ago.

Authorities say 62 victims were rescued and or retrieved during the operation.

A total of 34 people were confirmed dead when a multiple-storey building collapsed, while workers were on site, three weeks ago.
