A group of homeless people in Cape Town’s CBD, can breathe a sigh of relief as evictions have been put on hold.
Around 200 people had until midnight to leave at least 7 sites.
But the process has, now, been moved to next week.
There are homeless people aplenty, on FW de Klerk Boulevard and Buitengracht Street.
This, as the process to evict them has been halted for now.
In a letter, presented to them – which Heart FM News has seen, the relocation will now take place from the 5th to the 8th of August.
It also says they will be transported to shelters that accommodate both couples and individuals.
The group is represented by the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI).
This is what Senior Attorney Nkosinathi Sithole tells us…
SERI and City lawyers are still in ongoing talks to finalise the process before the evictions take place.
Earlier, our reporter Arthur Pose spoke to a few of the City’s homeless.
Sunya Leander says a shelter is not an option for her, after a bad experience some time back.
But, Joseph Mokhethi says he will go to a safe place to avoid being forcefully removed by law enforcement officers.
