Researchers from Stellenbosch University’s faculty of Engineering, have found that indoor air quality suffers when using fireplaces, with harmful substances exceeding World Health Organisation guidelines.
The health organisation recommends no more than three days of prolonged exposure to these small particles a year.
PhD candidate Rita van der Walt warns that these particles pose significant health risks.
