The Hawks say they’re expecting to make more arrests soon in their investigation into the Department of Fisheries’ alleged ties to abalonepoaching syndicates in the Overberg.

Nine marine inspectors from the department appeared alongside several alleged abalone syndicate members in the Hermanus Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

These officials are accused of selling confiscated abalone back to the poachers, and even escorting their shipments.

Hawks spokesperson, Philani Nkwalase says all accused are expected back in court for bail soon.

“…and the matter was postponed to the 14th of March,” says Captain Nkwalase.
