Operation Watershed has formally called for the recognition of the South African diaspora.

The group’s pushing for expats to be included as a key sector in the upcoming National Dialogue.

It argues that excluding citizens abroad undermines the country’s democratic legitimacy.

Founder Hayley Reichert stresses that living abroad does not strip them of their South African citizenship.

An online consultation will be held tomorrow, giving diaspora members the chance to nominate representatives, pending President Cyril Ramaphosa’s approval.

Reichert warns it would be a missed opportunity if the President rejects diaspora participation in the National Dialogue.
