Western Cape Police Management say they’re open to the idea of destroying illegal firearms locally.

Currently, these are stored – and then transported to Pretoria twice a year to be destroyed.

But the provincial commissioner says the potential sites that have been identified either aren’t suitable – or the companies are reluctant to assist the police.

The provincial government wants confiscated illegal guns to be destroyed immediately and that must happen here in the Cape.

And Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General  Thembisile Patekile says government is welcome to propose a facility -or mediate with companies that don’t seem interested in assisting them.

“If they’re not interested perhaps you could convince them to assist, because the National Police Commissioner indicated that he’s willing to consider that and do it locally, which will also much easier and cheaper for us to do”.
