Abductions and false job promises are just two of the methods used to traffic people in South Africa.

According to statistics from A21 – an organisation fighting human trafficking – 9.5% of cases reported to the NGO in 2023, were abductions, 16.7 % of cases were the result of victims being sold by relatives, and 47% were trafficked through fake employment promises.

This had been revealed by the organisation’s representatives during a second trafficking in persons awareness event that had been held in the Cape.

Yesterday’s event had taken place in Hermanus, following a similar gathering in Cape Town, in July.

Western Cape Social Development MEC Jaco Londt, says it’s vital to raise awareness around trafficking in persons as it remains a stark reality in many countries.

Londt recounts some of the Cape’s own struggles with suspected human trafficking cases.
