The Western Cape Infrastructure Department has cautioned against the sale of government housing units.
MEC for the department, Tertius Simmers, issued a beneficiary with a notice to vacate last month, after selling her free unit.
The beneficiary in question had received a unit at the Highbury Park Housing Project, in Kuils River, two years ago.
It’s believed the sale of the property was advertised on social media platforms.
After this matter, Simmers says an investigation into an alleged syndicate ensued — where they found that conveyancing attorneys and estate agents were also involved.
Simmers says citizens should not fall prey to these types of schemes.
“There are currently 568 000 people registered on the Western Cape Housing Demand Database, and we, therefore, cannot allow for such unscrupulous behaviour to go unpunished given the limited stock of free government housing. We are hoping that through this action, other beneficiaries will be discouraged from part-taking in similar unlawful transactions.”
