One of the pioneers of government’s digital communication with its citizens, has added his voice to the SASSA SRD scandal.

Professor Eldrid Jordaan initially used the popular early-2000s Instant Messaging portal, Mxit, to connect South Africans with office-bearers.

A few years later, he started GOV CHAT to do the same.

Fast-forward to the Covid-19 pandemic, Jordaan’s GOV CHAT portal was used by SASSA to digitise its Social Relief of Distress Grant.

Jordaan has since resigned from GOV CHAT.

He reached out to Heart FM News after hearing of last week’s expose, in which two first year university students uncovered a massive fraud scam.

ID numbers of millions of qualifying – and in some instances needy – South Africans have landed in the hands of fraudsters who are receiving SRD payouts illegally.

SASSA hasn’t yet budged on just how much money has been stolen.

Jordaan is irate.

Jordaan says those who hold top positions MUST be held accountable.
