Eskom says it’s yet to consider whether it wants to hand over the supply of electricity in the suburbs it serves, to the City of Cape Town.

In May, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, launched a petition lobbying for the Metro to manage Eskom-supplied areas.

The purpose, he says, is to offer much better infrastructure maintenance to those communities.

In response, the power utility says it’s main focus at the moment is on unbundling Eskom into three divisions.

That includes generation, distribution and transmission.

Eskom’s group executive generation, Bheki Nxumalo says they need to finish this process first.
