Environmentalists are weighing up their options.

Eskom’s been given the go-ahead to start its work on a new nuclear power station in Cape Town.

Environmental Affairs Minister Dion George, granted the power utility room to conduct its Environmental Authorisation in Duynefontein.

George, dismissed the appeal filed by the lobby groups in 2017.

This is part of efforts to generate more electricity for the country.

The Minister says this move doesn’t indicate the start of the construction of the new nuclear power station just yet.

But, it allows Eskom to obtain approvals, from various departments and entities, such the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Department and the National Nuclear Regulator.

But, the Earthlife Africa’s Makoma Leka-la-kala says they’re worried about the high costs for such projects.

Meanwhile, Green Connection’s Liz McDaid says such projects are risky, given our climate crisis.
