Eight suspected criminals have been shot and killed by police in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.
According to the police, eight would-be cash-in-transit robbers were killed in a shootout with officers while five others were arrested.
A multi-disciplinary investigating team who’d been following up on information, approached the suspects in the township on Monday.
Western Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa says the officers confiscated several firearms including seven AK-47s.
Community Safety and Police Oversight MEC, Anroux Marais, has lauded the police on their operation.
She says it’s important to figure out how the group attained these weapons.
Meanwhile, the chairperson of the Parliament’s portfolio committee on Police, Ian Cameron has commended the members’s action.
