The City of Cape Town says it’s worried about the increased disruptions at its key housing projects which are being targeted by criminals.

The most recent incident occurred at the Macassar housing development last weekend.

In a video that went viral, a taxi and a bakkie are seen entering the construction site.

Then a group of people get out of the taxi and proceed to attack two security guards.

It’s understood gang violence and alleged extortion are behind these attacks.

The City’s Luthando Thyalibhongo says they’re extremely concerned about the increasing trend of these activities.

“The City deploys additional security and law enforcement, and has contingency’s in place. However, the lead crime fighting authorities is the South African Police Services, and this is where the action and resolution is required. The City of Cape Town can only do what it can, but it is not the lead crime fighting agency. The project is currently not experiencing delays due to criminal disruption on site.”
