The City of Cape Town claims the police have agreed to use its special investigation units and services to tackle kidnapping and extortion cases.

Previously, the City had slammed SAPS top brass for being reluctant to make use of these units.

There have been at least two kidnapping incidents in the Mother City, in the last week.

They include the murder of an eight-year-old boy from Nyanga and the disappearance of a 35-year-old woman in the Blue Downs area.

Now, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says they have formed an inter-governmental kidnapping task force.

“Our officers are ready to play an active and operational role in supporting the SAPS interdicting these crimes, and ensuring that convictions take place. The incidents this week remind us that we cannot afford to rest on our laurels and that concrete and effective action is needed immediately. The City calls on anyone with information to please report it to SAPS or the City’s 24-hour tip-off line on 0800-11-00-77.”
