A senior City of Cape Town official allegedly linked to the construction mafia terrorizing building sites across the Cape, has been dismissed.

The former director of Public Housing, Siphokazi September, was fired after she was found guilty at her disciplinary hearing.

She’s been suspended since March 2023 after the police raided her office as well as that of former Mayco member Malusi Booi at Civic Centre.

The police acted on information about alleged fraud and corruption.

The municipality has also suspended two other officials for serious misconduct.

Booi resigned as DA councillor but is yet to be criminally charged.

But despite information suggesting otherwise, Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Carl Pophaim is adamant there’s no construction mafia running the City.

“I’m committing as a City and as a directorate that we will not allow this narrative to grow that the construction mafia runs the City. It does not. This is the Hill-Lewis administration (Cape Town Mayor). We will continue to fight tooth and nail to ensure that we eradicate those who look to extort from the poor, while we are trying to ensure delivery to the most vulnerable communities”.
