Cape Town’s political head of transport Rob Quintas has been attacked by a gun-wielding assailant.
The City’s VIP protection unit shot and wounded the man during the incident which happened in Joe Slovo in Milnerton on Wednesday.
Quintas is the Mayoral Committee member for Urban Mobility.
Recent challenges in his portfolio include people living on railway lines and the ongoing taxi violence.
Community activist, Loyiso Nkohla, who was part of negotiations – around the rail dwellers – was shot and killed last month.
And just three weeks ago Cata’s Charmaine Bailey was also shot and killed after a Wynberg Taxi Association meeting.
The City’s Mayco member for Safety and Security, JP Smith has condemned the attack on Quintas.
“We are relieved that an attack on the Member of Mayoral Committee for Urban Mobility, Cllr Rob Quintas in Phoenix, Milnerton was stopped by the VIP Unit of the City of Cape Town. I was just informed by the Safety & Security VIP Unit and councillor Rob Quintas that the VIP vehicle transporting the Mayoral Committee Member came under attack in Phoenix. The VIP Unit were required to use their firearms. A wounded suspect was arrested and is receiving medical care. A case will be opened at Milnerton SAPS”.
