Children are often the silent victims in homes affected by intimate partner violence.

That’s according to the 2025 South African Child Gauge released by UCT’s Children’s Institute.

The report highlights that children often endure deep emotional harm when exposed to violence in their homes.

Children’s NGO, Badisa says parents and guardians should pay closer attention to children’s behaviour and create space for them to speak openly.

Social worker Zoe Borchads explains what some of those warning signs may look like.

She adds that boys who witness or experience violence are more likely to become perpetrators later in life.
