The Western Cape’s Commissioner for Children says there appears to be an ambivalence to Child Protection Week.
Issues plaguing children like drugs, gangsterism and the violent crimes perpetrated against them are thrust into the spotlight.
National Child Protection Week is commemorated between the 29th of May and the 5th of June every year, to raise awareness of the rights of children as set out in the Children’s Act
But Child Commissioner, Christina Nomdo, says the expectation should be that children’s rights are kept top of mind every day of the year.
“It’s just a public relations exercise for us to tokenisticaly focus on children’s issues for a week and then forget them. From my side in the office I wish to appeal to all adults make Child Protection a daily occupation”.
