A women’s advocacy group has welcomed the finalisation of yet another femicide case.

Owen Steenberg killed his ex-girlfriend Charne Viljoen in May last year.

He has been sentenced to 20 years in prison – after he entered into a plea agreement with the state in the Atlantis Regional Court.

The founder of the Survivors Haven Foundation, Janine Passenz, says they are satisfied that proceedings wrapped up quickly.

“We are happy that it had come to an end, there’s a lot of cases that drags on for years. This was one of the quick cases in the Atlantis Magistrates court. We are happy for the community’s support, especially with the peaceful protest that we had and the petitions that were handed over at court.”

Meanwhile, another man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend will hear his fate in October.

That’s when the Western Cape High Court is expected to hand down judgement in the matter of Phillip April — accused of murdering Allison Plaatjies in Clanwilliam two years ago.
