The office of the Public Protector is investigating the alleged improper conduct by Central Karoo District Mayor, Gayton McKenzie, and the council.

This follows complaints laid by the South African Communist Party (SACP) in the region.

It comes after McKenzie received money – on behalf of the municipality – during a fundraising ceremony, in Gauteng.

He’s believed to have deposited the money into his private account instead of that of the municipality.

Public Protector spokesperson Oupa Segwale says the probe is in an advanced stage.

“That complaint was assessed for jurisdiction, and shortly thereafter we accepted jurisdiction and allocated it to an investigator — who has already commenced with investigation work in that regard. You will appreciate that this is still early on, on the investigation.”
