Cape Town detectives are trying to piece together the circumstances around a spate of shootings in some of the city’s most notorious townships.
Two separate mass shootings were reported in Nyanga and Khayelitsha.
Police have now reinforced its deployment to those areas.
All these shootings happened on Saturday the 8th of June.
It all started when two men were gunned down inside a shack by unknown individuals in Site B in Khayelitsha.
A few hours later four people, including three minors were shot dead in Site C with seven injured.
The seven remain in hospital.
In Nyanga, four people – two men and two women – were shot and killed.
The motive behind these shootings is unknown.
Western Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, says their members are hard at work looking for the alleged killers.
“We have our teams on the ground doing everything possible to resolve these murders. Apart from that, we have redeployed many of our police to these areas and stabilise these areas”.
Meanwhile, Patekile has confirmed that they have arrested four people in connection with a double murder in Site B.
“They were arrested in a stolen bakkie and the Quantum taxi that was seen in the incident has also been recovered. So all four of them are now being questioned. We will see if there’s a probability of a link between these two incidents that happened here in Khayelitsha”.
The Khayelitsha Community Policing Forum is calling for police intervention to combat the rampant crime in the township.
Chairperson Monde Bambelo says they’re experiencing gun violence daily.
“There’ve been killings every day, non-stop. Every day someone is being hit in every corner. On Wednesday, I was in a Somalian shop, not far from this scene, where four armed boys entered looking for protection fee money. Inside that shop, anything could have happened, but we kept quiet”.
