Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has welcomed the announcement of plans to lift the State of the Disaster.

On Tuesday Cooperative Governance Minister  Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, said government is moving forward to end the lockdown.

A clear announcement on that could be made next week.

She says they’ve drafted regulations that will enable the country manage the Covid-19 pandemic outside of the Disaster Management Act.

South Africans can now submit their comments and inputs on those proposed regulations. The deadline is Friday the 1st of April.

However, Hill-Lewis believes this is unnecessary.

He also says they don’t want size restrictions on public gatherings.

“I am concerned that many of the restrictions now in place under the Disaster Regulations will be made more permanent under the proposed Health Act regulations. Events, festivals, crowds, tourists, sports matches and businesses are coming back to Cape Town. Cape Town is also among the most vaccinated places in the country. There is no sound scientific reason to continue to restrict outdoor gathering sizes, and these restrictions only hold back the economic recovery that is so urgently necessary”.

These are the draft regulations.
