The Khayelitsha Development Forum says the situation in the area seems to be calm following Monday’s violence.

However, the forum says it’s worried about possible violence that might flare up again.

At least two buses were set alight in the suburb during the shutdown – which was organized by taxi mother body, SANTACO.

Golden Arrow and MyCiTi buses have since continued operating in the area – as they are being escorted by police and City law enforcement.

The forum’s Ndithini Tyhido says the strike had a negative impact on local people.

“The protest, or maybe the shutdown, by SANTACO has affected many ordinary people’s lives – as it relates to people could not access their places of work, and this placed their jobs at risk.”

Thyido says they support SANTACO’s struggle but are worried about violence.

“What we are saying to colleagues at SANTACO – and in our case in Khayelitsha, CODETA – is just for them to exercise restraint, so that there’s no further damage to property or harm to innocent commuters.”
